From Saraswati Puja, Poila Boishakh and Kali Puja to Holi, Bijoya and festive community gatherings, Hullor creates meaningful ways to celebrate the traditions that connect us to our roots. Rooted in Bengali heritage and shaped by the diverse community we are building here in the UK, Hullor creates a space where generations can come together with a genuine sense of belonging. Our celebrations bring families, friends, children, elders and newcomers into the same circle through music, food, faith, creativity, conversation and the simple joy of spending time with one another. For many of us, culture is carried in small things as much as in grand occasions. It lives in the sound of familiar songs, the excitement of dressing for a festival, the smell of festive food, the rhythm of a dhak, the colour of a puja mandap, the laughter around a shared table and the stories that travel from one generation to the next. Hullor exists to protect those connections while giving them room to grow. We want younger generations to experience the traditions their parents and grandparents knew, but also to make those traditions their own, creating memories that belong equally to their lives here. Our events range from spiritual and cultural celebrations to sports, music, community gatherings and family activities, but the purpose behind them is always wider than the programme itself. A festival may begin with a ritual, a performance or a game, yet what stays with us afterwards is often something more personal: a new friendship, an unexpected conversation, children playing together, old friends meeting again, or the comforting feeling of being surrounded by people who understand where you come from. Hullor also believes that culture becomes stronger when it is shared openly. While Bengali heritage sits at the heart of who we are, our community is welcoming, curious and outward-looking. It is the people who arrive early to help, the families who return year after year, the children growing up within the community, the friendships formed between celebrations and the countless conversations that happen quietly in between. It is made up of stories, ideas, memories and experiences, some joyful, some reflective and some beautifully ordinary. From the Community Desk is where we gather those stories. This is our space for documenting the life of Hullor beyond the stage, the mandap, the sports field or the event hall. Here, we share reflections from our celebrations, personal stories from members, cultural observations, creative work, photographs, memories, interviews and glimpses into the everyday moments that shape our community. Some pieces may look back at traditions that have travelled with us across generations, while others explore the new experiences, friendships and identities we are creating together here in the UK. For many of us, community exists in two places at once. There are the memories of where we came from, the neighbourhoods, festivals, family gatherings, songs, food and customs that shaped us, and there is the life we are building today. Between those two worlds lies a rich collection of stories worth preserving. A child's first Saraswati Puja in Britain, a family preparing together for Durga Puja, a cricket match that becomes an annual tradition, a song written late at night, an old photograph that suddenly brings back a forgotten memory, or a new member finding familiar faces in an unfamiliar place. These moments may seem small on their own, but together they form the living history of a community. We also want this space to celebrate the voices within Hullor. Our community includes writers, musicians, artists, photographers, filmmakers, professionals, parents, students, entrepreneurs and people with stories that may never have been written down before. From the Community Desk gives those voices a place to be heard. It is not only about reporting what happened, but about exploring what those experiences meant to the people who were there. Culture itself is never static. It changes as people move, generations grow and traditions find new surroundings. Through our stories, we can explore that evolution honestly and creatively. What does it mean to celebrate Bengali traditions thousands of miles from Bengal? Which customs remain exactly as we remember them, and which ones change? What do our children see when they experience these celebrations here? What new traditions are we creating without even noticing? These are the kinds of conversations we want to capture. There will also be room simply to celebrate people. New members joining the Hullor family, volunteers working quietly behind the scenes, young people achieving something special, community businesses growing, creative projects taking shape and individuals doing something that deserves to be shared. Every community has remarkable stories hidden within it, and sometimes all they need is someone to notice them. Over time, we hope this page becomes more than a collection of articles. We want it to become an evolving archive of Hullor itself, a place where future members can look back and understand how the community grew, what we celebrated, what mattered to us and who helped shape the journey. Because memories fade surprisingly quickly. Photographs remain in phones, stories stay inside families and wonderful moments disappear into old WhatsApp conversations. Writing them down gives them another life. From the Community Desk is our way of doing exactly that.
